  23. I have to concede that the interlace and transparency features of GIF/PNG
  24. make them of great value for certain web applications. But I see virtually
  25. no need for a lossless format. Jpeg can compress an image to be visually
  26. indistinguishable from the source, and still have a file size smaller than
  27. any other format. The only time jpeg really becomes inappropriate is when
  28. further processing is going to done to the image, or when going to print.
  29. And of course you probably wouldn't want to use a jpeg for web bitmaps.
